Overview of Somali Regional State



Somali Regional State has 9 zones and 67 woredas. The region has an estimated land mass of 289,000sq.kms and it is the second largest region in the country next to Oromia regional state.  The regional state is bordering with Kenya, Somalia, Djibouti Republics and the Oromia, Afar Regional States and Dire Dawa administrative council.

 
Somali regional state has an estimated population of 4.5 million among which 85% are pastoralists and agro-pastoralists where as the rests belongs to urban dwellers, petty traders and civil servants. Furthermore, the region has large number of livestock population which includes cattle, shoat and camels. The terrain of the region is a combination of hilly, thick, thorny bush areas good for camels and goats; and shrub/grassland/plains with grazing for sheep and cattle, and where crops may be grown particularly near rivers.
